Erickson Senior Living’s MA plan earns top recognition from CMS for fourth year in a row https://www.mcknightsseniorliving.com/home/news/business-daily-news/erickson-senior-livings-ma-plan-earns-top-recognition-from-cms-for-fourth-year-in-a-row/ Thu, 19 Oct 2023 04:04:00 +0000 https://www.mcknightsseniorliving.com/?p=86555 Erickson Advantage, Erickson Senior Living’s resident-only Medicare Advantage plan, has earned five stars from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for the fourth consecutive year.

Matthew Narrett, MD, Erickson Senior Living’s chief medical officer, said that the company is “proud” of the accomplishment.

“It speaks to the confidence that residents enjoy when they choose one of our health plan options,” Narrett said. Residents in the plan, he added, “benefit from an integrative health and well-being model supported by a team of experts who help them make the most of the vibrant lifestyle Erickson Senior Living communities offer.”

Erickson Advantage, offered through UnitedHealthcare Insurance Co, was created exclusively for residents of the continuing care retirement / life plan communities developed and managed by Erickson Senior Living for National Senior Communities.

According to Erickson, only 31 of the 545 Medicare Advantage health plans have achieved CMS 5-star standards for quality, member satisfaction and customer service for the 2024 plan year.

Erickson Advantage offerings have grown over the years. The plan added a fitness benefit “that focuses on both the physical and mental health and well-being” in 2021. For 2022, the company added a new telehealth benefit as well as a Part B premium rebate and a $0 specialist copay benefit to select plans.

CMS says that its rating system helps Medicare beneficiaries compare the quality of Medicare health and drug plans so they can make the best healthcare decisions for themselves. An important component of this effort, according to the agency, is to provide Medicare consumers and their caregivers meaningful information about quality alongside information about benefits and costs.

Medicare Advantage has gained more than 2 million enrollees in the past year, reaching more than 47% of the Medicare-eligible population, ATI Advisory previously reported.  Special needs plans also grew, with more than 1,300 plans serving more than 5 million beneficiaries this year.

CMS data show, however, that the average star ratings for Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D prescription drug plans decreased by 51% year over year from last year. Average ratings declined  to 4.04 and 3.11 stars, respectively, for the second consecutive year, according to an Oct. 13 fact sheet from the agency.

Senior living a growth area for LeadingAge Ziegler 200 not-for-profit providers https://www.mcknightsseniorliving.com/home/news/senior-living-a-growth-area-for-leadingage-ziegler-200-not-for-profit-providers/ Mon, 25 Sep 2023 04:08:00 +0000 https://www.mcknightsseniorliving.com/?p=85291 LeadingAge Ziegler 200 report cover
Cover detail from the 2023 LeadingAge Ziegler report.

National Senior Communities in Washington, DC, retained its top spot for the eighth consecutive year on the 2023 LeadingAge Ziegler 200 list of largest not-for-profit multi-site senior living and care organizations, based on number of units. The 20th anniversary report was released Thursday.

NSC, formerly National Senior Campuses, is the supporting organization to the continuing care retirement communities developed and managed by Erickson Senior Living.

The LZ 200 list counts total units, including independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing. In the past 10 years, the average annual growth rate in total units was 2.2%, with independent living and assisted living growth each year but declines in the number of nursing care beds, according to LeadingAge and Ziegler. Memory care also is becoming increasingly important, with 60% of organizations on the list now offering specialized memory care units, the report noted.

The 2023 LZ 200 saw some movement among the top 10 overall providers. The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society (No. 2), Ascension Living (No. 5), Trinity Health Senior Communities (No. 9) and Benedictine (No. 10) all retained their spots from the 2022 list.

Acts Retirement–Life Communities (No. 4), swapped places with Presbyterian Homes & Services (No. 3) this year. Lifespace Communities jumped from No. 8 last year to No. 6 this year, and HumanGood dropped to No. 7 this year compared with its No. 6 spot last year.

The 200 organizations represented a total of 300,000 market-rate units and almost 1,600 market-rate communities, based on data as of Dec. 31. Almont 30% of the total number of units for all long-term care systems in the LZ 200 are represented by the 10 largest providers. They are:

  1. National Senior Communities, Springfield, VA
  2. The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society, Sioux Falls, SD
  3. Presbyterian Homes & Services, Roseville, MN
  4. Acts Retirement-Life Communities, Fort Washington, PA
  5. Ascension Living, St. Louis
  6. Lifespace Communities Inc., Iowa
  7. HumanGood, Pleasanton, CA
  8. Covenant Living Communities & Services, Skokie, IL
  9. Trinity Health Senior Communities, Livonia, MI
  10. Benedictine, Duluth, MN

Companies with the overall biggest changes in the number of units from 2022 to 2023 were BHI Senior Living in Indiana, which gained 1,103 units since last year, and Retirement Housing Foundation in California, which shed 1,563 units.

The organization offering the greatest number of independent living units was National Senior Communities, with 19,140. Presbyterian Homes & Services was the provider with the greatest number of assisted living units, at 2,867, and Good Samaritan was named the largest provider of skilled nursing, with 8,423 units.

Organizations provide market-rate senior living in 48 states, with Pennsylvania hosting the highest number of system headquarters, at 26, and Minnesota claiming the largest total number of communities, with 212.

An additional list of the country’s largest not-for-profit single-campus organizations was led by Shell Point Retirement Community in Fort Myers, FL, with 1,869 units. National Church Residences led the list of largest multi-site providers with total market-rate and affordable senior living units combined, with 25,063 units. Riderwood Village, a National Senior Communities campus in Silver Spring, MD, led the list of largest individual campuses, with 2,153 market-rate units.

This year’s report also includes insights into trends in future growth plans, joint ventures, third-party management, rental life plan communities, technology adoption and home- and community-based services.

Similar to the past several years, today’s not-for-profit providers primarily are growing through unit expansion and affiliation or acquisition activity, according to Ziegler President and CEO Dan Hermann. Approximately 71% of organizations said they intend to expand or reposition an existing campus in 2023 or 2024, about 16% said they intend to grow through construction of new communities, and 12% reported their intent to become bigger through affiliations.

Technology use continues to increase in the sector, with 72% of communities adopting electronic point of care/point of service documentation systems and electronic health/medical records. Other technology categories climbing in use among senior living and care providers included social connectedness/resident engagement (used by 60% of organizations), analytical tools (42%), staff and resident screening (55%), infection control technologies (55%), robotic process automation (30%) and physical robotics (70%).

Thirty-two percent of the 2023 LZ 200 organizations provide affordable senior housing, up from 31% last year.

The offering of HCBS also is growing through home health, home care, adult care, continuing care at home or Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly programs: 45% of providers on the list offer HCBS services to non-residents, with continuing care at home now offered by more than 10% of LZ 200 organizations.

More than 75% of the LZ 200 organizations have a religious affiliation — predominantly Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist and Catholic — or a fraternal (2.5%) or military (0.5%) affiliation. Lutheran organizations represent the largest presence by number of units, with more than 50,000, followed by Presbyterian affiliations, with more than 41,500 units.

The complete LZ 200 report is available for download on the websites of LeadingAge and Ziegler.

Argentum releases 2023 lists of largest senior living providers; industry expresses ‘cautious optimism’ in post-COVID world https://www.mcknightsseniorliving.com/home/news/argentum-releases-2023-lists-of-largest-senior-living-providers-industry-expresses-cautious-optimism-in-post-covid-world/ Mon, 18 Sep 2023 04:09:00 +0000 https://www.mcknightsseniorliving.com/?p=84951 Argentum 150 largest provider logo

In a post-COVID world, the senior living industry is “cautiously optimistic” about its future as it experiences significant market changes driven by a combination of demographic shifts, evolving consumer preferences and advances in technology, according to Argentum, which released its 2023 list of the 150 largest senior living providers in the nation on Friday.

The report revealed a shuffling of the top 10 largest providers, but all remained at or near their 2022 positions

Brookdale Senior Living maintained its top spot on the list, with Five Star Senior Living — the senior living division of AlerisLife — dropping two spots to No. 6 this year, from the No. 4 spot last year. Discovery Senior Living (No. 7 this year) and Senior Lifestyle (No. 8) swapped places from last year, as did Watermark Retirement Communities (No. 9 this year) and Integral / Solstice Senior Living (No. 10).

Other top 10 providers are Atria Senior Living (remaining at No. 2), LCS (maintaining at No. 3), Erickson Senior Living (No. 4) and Sunrise Senior Living (No. 5).

Top 10 largest providers by total units:

  1. Brookdale Senior Living: 55,430 total units
  2. Atria Senior Living: 42,501 units
  3. LCS: 31,523 units
  4. Erickson Senior Living, 23,800 units
  5. Sunrise Senior Living, 23,176 units
  6. Five Star Senior Living: 19,554 units
  7. Discovery Senior Living, 14,660 units
  8. Senior Lifestyle, 14,129 units
  9. Watermark Retirement Communities, 11,336 units
  10. Integral Senior Living: 10,451 units

Eleven providers moved up on the list by 10 or more places, according to the association, which ranks providers in size by number of units, number of employees, types of care and services offered and more.

Topping the list of the 30 largest assisted living providers are Brookdale (30,570 assisted living units), Sunrise (13,944 units) and Atria (9,895 units). Five Star fell from the No. 3 spot last year to No. 5 this year, while Atria, which was not on last year’s list, landed at the No. 3 spot.

The three largest independent living providers changed this year. Atria (30,692 units), which wasn’t on last year’s list, claimed the No. 1 spot, followed by No. 2. LCS (22,658 units), which dropped from No. 1 on last year’s list. Erickson SEnior Living (21,765 units) landed at No. 3.

Brookdale continued to lead the list of largest memory care providers, with 8,996 memory care units. Sunrise maintained its No. 2 spot with 6,233 units, followed by Frontier Management LLC with 3,126 units.

The largest continuing care retirement / life plan community providers also changed this year. Trilogy Health Services, which didn’t make the top 15 last year, landed at No. 1, with 115 CCRCs, followed by LCS, which dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 this year, with 86 CCRCs, followed by Century Park Associates, which maintained its No. 3 spot with 31 CCRCs.

The full lists can be accessed via the Argentum website. The report, based on company-provided data via survey, also includes information on the potential effects of artificial intelligence on the senior living industry, growth in the home care market based on a preference to age in place, and information on inflationary pressures and workforce projections.

The report was prepared in partnership with Lument and sponsored by Accushield.
