It is no secret that the senior living industry is facing a workforce shortage. To address turnover and improve retention, Accushield implemented a software as a service-based workforce platform, Flex, with the goal of making it easier for employees to take control of their schedules. For its efforts, the company was awarded Gold in the Tech Partner of the Year category in the Senior Living track at the 2023 McKnight’s Excellence in Technology awards.

This category recognized companies that helped operators deliver better services or care or improve their bottom lines, ensuring the field’s continued success.

Customers who use the platform are seeing “dramatic” reduction in turnover, third-party agency usage and overtime, while simultaneously reducing the administration time needed for scheduling and shift call-out by up to 85%, according to Accushield. The platform fosters flexible scheduling through the use of templates as well as instant call-out features based on employee availability, mobile accessibility that provides real-time connectivity to schedules and direct in-app communication, as well as the ability to send open shift requests to customized tiers of employees.

The entry discussed Bickford Senior Living’s implementation of the platform in 52 communities, enabling it to save millions in overtime costs and staffing agency usage, according to Accushield.

Falls are dangerous for many senior living residents, but they are especially dangerous for residents living with memory loss, who are three times more likely to have a serious injury when a fall occurs.

To combat this situation, the Forum at Rancho San Antonio in Cupertino, CA (managed by Life Care Services) used VirtuSense Technologies’ VSTAlert. The community won a Gold award in the Quality category of the Senior Living track of the 2023 McKnight’s Excellence in Technology awards for its efforts.

The Quality category recognized the use of technology to improve the quality of services or care.

The provider said it chose VSTAlert because it could provide one-to-one monitoring of, for instance, in-room sitting without needing additional staff members or increasing the workload on current staff members. After five months of using the technology, The Forum saw an 80% reduction in falls with injury and had actionable data for its care team. The tech also helped provide tailored care plans for three frequent fallers. Each resident was monitored, and any fall incidents were analyzed by VirtuSense and the care team.

Other award winners in the Senior Living track’s Quality category:

  • Silver: Arrow Senior Living Management for its use of PointClickCare’s electronic health records system and Microsoft’s Power BI.
  • Bronze: Aviva Senior Living/Lloyd Jones for its use of Rythmos, from Intrex.

Staff members at Concord, CA-based Carlton Senior Living have a lot on their plates. To ease the burden, the company implemented Amazon’s Alexa technology, working with Speak2, to streamline communication between staff members and residents. This effort resulted in a decrease in staff member time spent on nonurgent requests. For this reason, Carlton was awarded Gold in the Innovator of the Year category of the Senior Living track of the 2023 McKnight’s Excellence in Technology Awards.

The Innovator of the Year category recognized technologic innovation deemed to have made a difference in the provision of services or care or the bottom line.

The Alexa application is a crucial tool for staff members at Carlton, according to the company. Through it, the company makes announcements, schedules daily reminders and can take attendance in real time. Meanwhile, residents can ask Alexa for information, call the front desk and even schedule rides.

Staff members use an app or website. Speak2 helped define and create new workflows and develop new technologies, the provider said. Use of the tech reduced care staff visits that were needed by 91%, Carlton said.

“Winning the McKnight’s Tech Award for Innovator of the Year is huge for us. At Carlton Senior Living, we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of technology, and winning this award truly validates all the work our residents and staff have put into making this project a success,” said Carlton Vice President of Business Operations and Technology Taren Petros. “We’re proud of the work we’ve put into this project, and we’ll continue to push the boundaries of how voice activated technology can help connect our communities. We thank McKnight’s for acknowledging how important technology is to the industry and for honoring us with this award.”

Other Innovator of the Year awards in the Senior Living track:

  • Silver: The Admiral at the Lake, a Kendal affiliate in Chicago, for its use of the HUCU.ai communication platform by MPAC Healthcare.
  • Bronze: Maplewood Senior Living, based in Westport, CT, for its use of Inspiren’s AUGi augmented intelligence platform at the Inspir Carnegie Hill senior living community in New York City.

As the cost of living continues to increase in the United States, financial flexibility is a big draw for many senior living workers and potential workers at a time when recruiting and retaining employees remains a challenge for the industry.

As an alternative to the common biweekly paycheck, Des Moines, IA-based Life Care Services, an LCS company, implemented DailyPay software so that its employees could access their earned pay on demand when they wanted it. The effort led to Life Care Services taking home Gold in the Keep It Super Simple category of the Senior Living track in the 2023 McKnight’s Excellence in Technology Awards.

“This win means we are doing our part to deliver and focus on people-centered benefits to help our team members have financial stability, clarity around their pay, and overall less stress,” said Heidi Terdal, LCS IT director. “The results we have seen confirm that and remind us to continue challenging ourselves and what can we do better to ensure our staff has what they need to provide our residents with purposeful living filled with rich experiences. Happy employees lead to happy residents.”

Since its use at Life Care Services in February 2022, the DailyPay program has received much traction and positive reviews from employees, according to the company. Just more than 7,000 employees, 38% of those eligible, have enrolled, and the company said that usage statistics are proving its success.

Twenty-three percent of employees using DailyPay, on average, stay with Life Care Services longer than non-DailyPay users, according to the company, and 58% of the users who were asked said that they have an improved opinion of Life Care Services since it started offering the on-demand pay program.

Falls can have more than just physical effects on senior living residents. They also can have mental health effects.

Chapel Hill, NC, continuing care retirement community Carolina Meadows said that use of VirtuSense Technologies’ VSTBalance technology helped residents there regain the confidence in themselves to improve their independent mobility. This effort earned the CCRC a Gold award in the Building Bridges category of the Senior Living track of the 2023 McKnight’s Excellence in Technology Awards.

The Building Bridges category recognized the use of technology to improve connections between staff members and residents and/or their families.

Carolina Meadows said that VSTBalance was introduced on the campus in August 2021 and has been a critical support since its adoption. To date, the CCRC has assessed 562 residents and completed 1,982 individual assessments. On average, resident gait improved 25%, and average forward reach improvement was 39%. Seventy percent of all residents that went through an reassessment improved in either balance, gait or function, according to the community.

“The Carolina Meadows wellness team promotes the GAIT assessment, which uses artificial intelligence, and it has been very helpful and successful in our fall prevention awareness efforts throughout our community,” Carolina Meadows Wellness Services Manager Michelle Marino said. “The data from the assessment has been imperative in measuring the success of our interventions and planning for future fall prevention activities and education. We look forward to continuing to use this new technology.”

Carolina Meadows’ efforts also resulted in the Best in Show award in the 2023 McKnight’s Excellence in Technology Awards.

Other award winners in the Senior Living track’s Building Bridges category:

  • Silver: Arrow Senior Living Management, St. Charles, MO, for its use of the custom Archer Scheduling Tool, designed to stabilize staffing, reduce agency costs and streamline travel team scheduling.
  • Bronze: Ingleside, Rockville, MD, for its use of the Cubigo digital platform, which allows residents to manage their schedules, order meals, make dining reservations, request maintenance, connect with staff members and other residents, and participate in virtual events.

An entry from Chapel Hill, NC, continuing care retirement community Carolina Meadows was named Best in Show in the 2023 McKnight’s Excellence in Technology Awards during a virtual ceremony on Wednesday that saw dozens of awards go to senior living, skilled nursing and home care providers, as well as technology company partners to providers, across several categories and tracks.

The Best in Show award, bestowed for an entry titled “Building a Mobile Community with AI Assessments,” about Carolina Meadow’s use of VSTBalance by VirtuSense Technologies, was chosen from all winners across the three tracks of the competition: Senior Living, Skilled Nursing and Home Care. The entry also captured the Gold award in the Building Bridges category of the Senior Living track.

Carolina Meadows said that it was introduced to the technology at a campus event in August 2021 and that the technology has become instrumental in supporting residents’ health and wellness as well as in building relationships between residents, fitness staff members, and the community’s leadership.

The awards presentation capped a McKnight’s Tech Awards + Summit that also included three webinars. Sixteen awards were bestowed across five categories in the Senior Living track during the ceremony.

Also back again is the Technology Partner of the Year award, an all-division award covering senior living, skilled nursing and home care.

See this site for more details on categories and rules. Vendors are eligible to enter only the Tech Partner of the Year category.

The Sept. 20 virtual McKnight’s Technology Summit will feature educational webinars. A full agenda will be announced at a later date.

Winners will be recognized across McKnight’s Senior Living, McKnight’s Long-Term Care News and McKnight’s Home Care and all their social and traditional media platforms.
